Choosing the best photographer for you.

You've made the decision-it's time to get those photos done that you've been putting off for way too long. You start the google search and quickly find yourself completely overwhelmed in a sea of photographers just in your town alone. There are thousands of options (literally) when it comes to selecting a photographer, and I'm here to give you some guidance on exactly how to go about finding the absolute best fit for you and your needs.

1. Style

Choosing a photographer whose style appeals to you is SO important. Do you prefer bright, colorful images? Muted, matte fine art portraits? The amazing thing about photographers is that even though we might use the same equipment and programs, just like painters, we each have a unique shooting and editing style. Find a style that gives you the feeling you want to feel when you see your portraits hanging on your walls, or as you flip through your album.

2. Specialty

I always recommend finding a photographer that specializes in the type of photo session you are inquiring about. A photographer who understand their subject knows how to guide, pose, . Take horses for example--someone who is not an equine photographer might not even know we like our horses ears forward! Choosing someone who specializes in their field is important not only to ensure quality images, but for safety reasons as well. For example, with infants, it's extremely important to have someone who knows what they are doing when wrapping your child. If improperly wrapped, this can lead to injury. Spend the extra money for an experienced photographer. I promise you won't regret it!

3. Experience

What kind of experience are you looking to have with your photographer? As people look into photographers, they may not even realize that photographers are there for so much more than showing up to the session, taking pictures and leaving. Many people thus avoid getting a photoshoot at all because they have no idea how to prepare or what to do with the resulting images. I'm here to tell you that many photographers, myself being one, offer a fantastic client experience that supports you from start to finish. Photographers like myself are not only your photographer, we are your stylist, your google search bar, your interior designer, your print expert and beyond. Photoshoots are an investment in your most important memories; find someone who can help you make the most of it.

4. Personality

This is so important-find a photographer that you feel comfortable with! If someones personality doesn't feel approachable to you, if they make you feel uncomfortable, or even if something just feels off, they may not be the right photographer for you. Interview potential photographers on the phone and take a few minutes to get know them. In front of the camera is a vulnerable place to be, but it can actually be a super fun and enjoyable experience when you're comfortable with the person behind the lens. Find someone who is authentic, supportive and shows up to celebrate you!
